Brainstorming for NHD - Finding an Interesting Topic

Using your textbook:

Step 1 - Turning Points in History: People, Ideas & Events

What is National History Day? How does it help us to learn US History? What effect will it have on learning how to conduct research & make presentations? How long will it take to complete? How will it affect our grades? What is the process?

NHD Theme 2013

  • Reread the article on this year's theme - What does this mean? You have the hard copy marked up in your binders :-)
  • Look at the list of possible topics in US History(not World History) - What interests you?
  • Research the topic for your NHD project MHS US History Database
  • What kind of format interests you? Building a website through Weebly.com (free version) or making a documentary,or a tri-fold poster?
  • Who will you work with? Maximum # in groups - 3 people - This is due to absenteeism in the class. Each group member will conduct a separate portion of the research for individual grades - More on research with Ms Musilli!

Today's Goal: Form groups & Identify possible topic - this is subject to my approval!

NHD Topic List 2013

Ask yourself: How does this topic fit with the NHD theme. When you present your project to the class, be sure that I will ask you this!

Step 2 - How to Conduct Research & Create an Annotated Bibliography

Ms. Musilli's Great Websites!

Step 3 - Individual Research: 3 Marked Up Sources from the websites above!

Note-Taking! See the document below for how to take more effective notes

IMPORTANT: Decide where you are going to record & save your markups, source list & source analysis pages - wiki/Google Docs/FlashDrive/Notebook (must have a devoted section for NHD only!)

  • Listen & Learn how to locate great sources: websites, videos, articles for your NHD project
  • Learn how to create Annotated Bibliographies for your project
  • Find potential sources and email them to yourself for MarkUP - Quiz grades - every group member needs 3 different documents!
  • Mark up #1 due next class -printed, Marked up to hand in at beginning of class - quiz grade - EACH group member must have a different article.
  • Mark up #2 - printed & quiz grade - Due next class Each group member must have a different article because they are covering a different aspect of the topic Example: The Space Race - 1 member will research Neil Armstrong - 1st Man to Walk on the Moon - American Astronaut- The other group member will research Yuri Gargarin - 1st Man in Spaces - Soviet Cosmonaut
  • Mark up #3 - printed for quiz grade - Due next class. Now all group members have 3 DIFFERENT MARKED UP SOURCES

  • Step 4 - Source Analysis - 10 Sources Required

Analyze each of your sources using the "SEE" format!!
    • 2-4 Primary Sources
    • 5-7 Secondary Sources
    • Complete 1 SEE document per source limit 10. Keep the hard copy in your notebooks or use the electronic copy and put in your wiki - virtual notebook. Use your SEE document notes to write 3-4 sentences about each source in your
      annotated bibliography.

Step 5 - Thesis Writing

  • Identifying what makes a good thesis statement & writing a "working" thesis statement for your part of your NHD project
  • The Big Picture

Okay now you have the big picture regarding the context of your project, now it's time to write the "working" thesis statement. Here are some resources to help determine what makes a good thesis or a bad one.

Step 6 - Make an Outline of your Paper

Create an outline of what your paper will include. It is just like building a house, your house will have 4 walls etc but this house will be custom-built by you! Not all houses will look the same...they each have different blueprints!
  • Use the guiding questions from your K-W-L chart to shape the guidelines of your argument. What you WANT to know/What you WANT others to know about your topic
  • Learned category of K-W-L chart - shows your evidence & research

Step 6A - Writing the Research Paper 4-5 pages not including the Annotated Bibliography

Research Paper Format.JPG

Introduction:

  • Should tell the reader the subject of my research & define key terms that I will use in my thesis
  • Contains a clearly-stated thesis which explains how & why something happened and is directly related to the NHD theme: Turning Points in History

Body Paragraphs:

  • Should be structured so that they support your thesis.
  • Should complete one part of your argument before moving on to the next argument: DO NOT repeat/revisit a arguments made in other parts of your paper
  • should be focused around a main idea, which is stated in the paragraph's topic sentence
  • each paragraphs includes evidence supporting the idea & is documented
  • all evidence presented is analyzed in your own words (Why & How the evidence supports the topic sentence of the paragraph)
  • each paragraph has a smooth transition to the next paragraph

Quoting & Citations

  • All material quoted appears in quote marks.
  • Block quotes are used minimally
  • Evident brought in that is not common knowledge, will be cited as to the source.
  • Quotes will be properly integrated into the paragraph
  • All quotes clearly relate to to a citation which tells the source and page number of the quotation
  • An annotated bibliography will be included (See below)

Style

  • the paper is 4-5 pages 1.5 linespaces- 12 font New Times Roman

  • the title of the paper clearly relates to its contents, or to the guiding questions already determined

Send me your paper via gmail - use either Google Doc format or Microsoft Word -

Due Date Period 1- December 7 2012 - Pearl Harbor Day

Step 7 - Annotated Bibliography

Use easybib.comto create an annotated bibliography entry and transfer your source into a word or google doc. Put similar items together:
all websites go into the section: Websites, all books go into the book section, videos etc....
  • HINT: Use your notes from all those SEE documents that you've already written.(You have at least 3 SEE Document Evaluation Sheets done)
  • Your annotated bibliography may have more than 10 sources - you will need to cite all your sources - but you would only create a SEE document for 10 sources
  • Separate sources into categories: primary sources, secondary source, videos, etc.
  • All images will be on an image list.

Group Huddle! It's presentation time!!

Step 8- Choosing a format for your Presentation - Weebly? Wiki? Poster?

In choosing a format, you must remember that it is a group project and that all group members should have access to the site especially if someone is absent from class. Each group member should build or help build their part of the project. Weebly,Documentary, or 3- Fold posters
See the free website below.

Checklist for making your presentation

Step 8A - Writing the Storyboard for your presentation

Daily Group Participation Charts
Map out or outline the major points of your project/presentation & tell me who is doing whatever aspect of your topic. This must be done before the final project is done..
You can put this on your wiki or into your notebooks. Everyone should have a copy in case anyone is absent.

Step 9 - Creating Your Project Process Paper

Working in a Group to create the NHD project due for Presentation Due
(Check the rubric on Step 10!)
PROCESS PAPER - 1 process paper per group
Possible ideas to talk in 1 page - 1.5 line spacing
  • How you decided on the topic
  • Why you chose the format - Weebly, Slide Rocket etc -
  • How difficult/ easy was it to build the project - sources, annotated bib, website
  • How did you divide the work in the group
  • Other ideas?
You can attach this to your website or pass in hard copy.

Step 10 - Presentation of Project to class & Reflection Paper

Reflection Paper - 1 Page -1.5 line spacing - due the day after the presentation
1 Reflection Paper per Group Member

You can attach this to the website or pass in hard copy.

Here is the official NHD presentation rubric that will be used to judge your project

Use these Student Evaluation Sheets to help you actively listen to the projects. They will be collected and graded:-)
